Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the early 16th century (originally in Scottish legal usage meaning 'legally sufficient') from Medieval Latin relevans, the present participle of relevare ('to lift up, lighten, or assist'), from Latin re- ('again') and levare ('to raise or lighten', from levis, 'light in weight').
