Word Origin & Etymology
First recorded in the early 17th century, the word derives from Medieval Latin punctualis ('of or relating to a point'), ultimately from Latin punctus ('a point or prick'). It originally referred to strict adherence to fine points of etiquette or procedure before narrowing to exactness in keeping an appointed time.
