Word Origin & Etymology
First recorded in the mid-17th century, possibly a clipping of the obsolete word 'pundigrion' (a fanciful or nonsensical play on words), which itself may be an alteration of 'punctilio' from Italian 'puntiglio' (a fine point or quibble).
