Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 14th century from Old French 'preocupacion' or directly from Latin 'praeoccupationem' (a seizing beforehand), a noun of action from the verb 'praeoccupare' (from 'prae-' meaning 'before' and 'occupare' meaning 'to seize'). The psychological sense of mental absorption emerged in the early 19th century.
