Word Origin & Etymology
Formed as a compound of 'port' and 'side'. The nautical sense of 'port' (replacing the older 'larboard') derives from the side of a vessel traditionally turned toward the harbor or dock for loading, so as not to foul the steering oar mounted on the right (starboard) side.
