Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in the early 20th century by combining 'pip' (a small fruit seed or a high-pitched sound) and 'squeak' to evoke something tiny and shrill; during World War I, British soldiers also used it as slang for a small German artillery shell that made a high-pitched whistling noise.
