Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by the families of Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum; according to Joan Pritchard, the name alludes to the 'pickle boat' in crew racing, which is staffed by leftover oarsmen from other boats, reflecting how the game combined leftover equipment from several different sports.
