Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 16th century as a back-formation from "perplexed" or from the Middle English adjective "perplex", originating from Old French and ultimately from Latin "perplexus" (entangled, intricate, or confused), formed from "per-" (thoroughly) and "plexus", the past participle of "plectere" (to plait or weave).
