Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in the mid-20th century, originally as a blend of 'parachute' and 'medic' to describe military medical personnel who parachuted into combat zones, and later reanalyzed as a back-formation from 'paramedical' (combining the Greek prefix para-, meaning 'beside' or 'auxiliary', with Latin medicus, meaning 'physician').
