Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed via Latin from Ancient Greek 'paralysis' (a loosening at the side or disabling of nerves), from 'paralyo' (to loosen or disable), formed from 'para-' (beside) and 'lyo' (to loosen). The word 'palsy' is an older English doublet derived from the same Greek root via Old French.
