Formed in the early 18th century as a compound of 'pall' (from Old English 'pæll', ultimately from Latin 'pallium', meaning 'cloak') and 'bearer'. Historically, pallbearers walked alongside the coffin holding the corners of the heavy velvet pall draped over it, before the role evolved into physically carrying the casket itself.
