Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in 1933 by Choudhry Rahmat Ali, an Indian Muslim nationalist. It was formed as an acronym of the regions for the proposed state (Punjab, Afghan Province, Kashmir, Sindh, and BaluchisTAN), while also utilizing the Persian/Urdu words 'pak' (pure) and '-istan' (land), translating collectively to 'Land of the Pure'.
