Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 19th century from Modern Greek ouzo (ούζο). Its ultimate origin is uncertain, though it is commonly traced either to the Italian phrase uso Marsiglia ('for Marseille use'), stamped on crates of high-quality silkworm cocoons exported from Thessaly, or to the Turkish word üzüm, meaning 'grape' or 'grape infusion'.
