Word Origin & Etymology
Formed from the adjective 'obedient' plus the adverbial suffix '-ly'. 'Obedient' derives via Old French from the Latin 'oboedientem', the present participle of 'oboedire' (to obey, literally 'to listen to'), a compound of 'ob-' (to, toward) and 'audire' (to hear).
