Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the early 19th century from French nicotine, coined from the Neo-Latin genus name Nicotiana (tobacco plant), which honors Jean Nicot (1530–1600), the French ambassador to Portugal who sent tobacco seeds and powdered leaves to Paris in 1560.
