Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in its modern sense by British author J.K. Rowling in 1997 for the Harry Potter series, adapted from the British slang word 'mug' (a gullible person or dupe) softened to sound less derogatory. In 1920s and 1930s American jazz slang, the plural form 'muggles' independently meant marijuana.
