Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the mid-20th century from 'miniature' plus the suffix '-ize'. The root 'miniature' comes from Italian 'miniatura', ultimately from Latin 'miniare' (to color with red lead, used in illuminating small manuscript letters), which later became associated with Latin 'minimus' (smallest).
