Word Origin & Etymology

Formed in English from 'mindful' and the suffix '-ness', from Old English 'gemynd' (memory, thought). Its modern psychological and meditative sense was established in the late 19th century by British scholar T. W. Rhys Davids as a translation of the Pali Buddhist term 'sati' (awareness or retention).
