British Any of several autumn-blooming perennial plants (especially of the genera Aster and Symphyotrichum), native primarily to North America but widely cultivated in European gardens for their abundant purple, pink, or white daisy-like flowers.
Example
"We planted a large cluster of Michaelmas daisies in the garden to ensure vibrant purple blooms well into the autumn season."
Word Origin & Etymology
The plant is named for its tendency to bloom in the Northern Hemisphere around late September, coinciding with Michaelmas, the Christian feast of St. Michael the Archangel celebrated on September 29. The term 'daisy' was appended due to the flower's similar shape.
