Word Origin & Etymology
From Late Middle English, originally functioning as a verb meaning 'to cultivate land'. It derives from Anglo-Norman French 'mainoverer' (to work with the hands), from Latin 'manu' (by hand) and 'operari' (to work). The meaning eventually narrowed to applying fertilizer, and by the 16th century, it was used as a noun referring to the fertilizer itself.
