Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 14th century from Old French 'mage', from Latin 'magus' (magician, learned man), which came via Ancient Greek from Old Persian 'magush' (member of a priestly caste). Initially archaic, the term was revived in the late 20th century by fantasy literature and role-playing games.
