Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the early 17th century from Latin luxuriatus, the past participle of luxuriari ('to grow rankly, abound, or indulge in excess'), from luxuria ('rankness, extravagance, or luxury'). Its original English sense referred to plants growing profusely before shifting toward human indulgence and sensory pleasure.
