Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the mid-17th century from Latin lēnientem, the present participle of lēnīre ('to soften, soothe, or alleviate'), from lēnis ('soft, mild, gentle'). Originally used in medicine to describe soothing remedies that eased pain, the word soon shifted to its modern sense of mildness in judgment or punishment.
