Word Origin & Etymology
In its anatomical sense, 'lats' is a modern informal clipping of the plural of 'latissimus dorsi' (Latin for 'broadest of the back'). As a currency unit, 'lats' was borrowed from Latvian, coined in 1922 from the country's name, Latvija.
