Word Origin & Etymology
From Old English landhlaford, a compound of land ('ground, estate') and hlaford ('lord, master', literally 'loaf-ward' or keeper of the bread). Originally denoting a feudal lord who owned land, the word shifted by the 15th century to mean one who leases property to tenants.
