Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Hebrew 'k'néset', meaning 'assembly' or 'gathering', from the verb root 'k-n-s' ('to gather or assemble'). It takes its name from the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah (Men of the Great Assembly), the ancient Jewish legislative and religious council of the Second Temple period.
