Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the mid-19th century from German Kindergarten, literally meaning 'children's garden' (from Kinder, plural of Kind 'child', and Garten 'garden'). The term was coined in 1840 by German educator Friedrich Fröbel to reflect his vision of nurturing young children like plants in a garden.
