Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the early 19th century from French 'quine' (five winning lottery numbers), ultimately derived from the Latin distributive numeral 'quini', meaning 'five each'. Although the name is European, the modern casino game was popularized in the United States by Chinese immigrants in the mid-19th century.
