Word Origin & Etymology

Originally a generic informal use of the masculine given name Joe (short for Joseph). The slang sense for coffee emerged in the 1930s in the United States, possibly as a shortening of 'jamoke' (a blend of Java and Mocha) or in reference to Josephus Daniels, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy who banned alcohol aboard naval ships in 1914, leaving sailors to drink coffee.
