Word Origin & Etymology

First recorded in the late 16th century meaning the putting on of vestments or robes, the word derives from Italian 'investimento', from Latin 'investire' ('to clothe'). The modern financial sense arose in the early 17th century via the East India trade, viewing the conversion of money into goods or property as 'clothing' raw capital in a new form.
