Word Origin & Etymology
Formed from the adjective intransigent plus the adverbial suffix -ly. Intransigent was borrowed in the late 19th century from French intransigeant and Spanish los intransigentes (a name given to extreme Spanish republicans who refused to compromise), ultimately from Latin in- ('not') and transigere ('to come to an agreement').
