Word Origin & Etymology
Formed from the verb 'interfere', which entered English in the 15th century from Old French 'entreferir' ('to strike each other'), combining Latin 'inter-' ('between') and 'ferire' ('to strike'). Originally a veterinary term describing a horse striking one fetlock against the other while walking, it broadened to mean meddling in others' affairs.
