Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 16th century from French infanterie and Italian infanteria, from infante ('youth' or 'foot soldier'), ultimately from Latin infans ('young child', literally 'unable to speak'), because young attendants accompanied mounted knights on foot.
