Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in the 1840s by Scottish surgeon James Braid (initially as 'neuro-hypnotism'), derived from the Ancient Greek 'hypnos' meaning 'sleep' (and the name of the Greek god of sleep) combined with the suffix '-osis' denoting a condition or state.
