Word Origin & Etymology
The sense meaning 'satisfactory' arose in mid-19th-century New York slang from Dutch honk ('home base' in children's games), later popularized in the reduplicated compound 'hunky-dory'. The modern sense describing a muscular man developed independently in the mid-20th century from 'hunk' ('large piece').
