Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the mid-19th century as a compound of 'house' and 'husband', modeled directly after 'housewife'. Ironically, 'husband' itself originally meant 'master of a house' in Old Norse (húsbóndi), making 'househusband' an etymological tautology.
