Word Origin & Etymology
In the sense of liquor, 'hooch' is a late 19th-century shortening of 'Hoochinoo', an Anglicization of the Tlingit name for an indigenous Alaskan group known for distilling their own potent spirits. The military slang sense for a hut or dwelling arose separately in the 1950s from Japanese 'uchi' (house).
