Word Origin & Etymology

In its sense as an interjection and representation of laughter, the word is a natural onomatopoeic reduplication attested since Old English. In the landscape architecture sense (more commonly hyphenated as 'ha-ha'), it was borrowed in the early 18th century from French haha, named from the exclamation of surprise uttered upon unexpectedly encountering the concealed drop.
