Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in American English in the 1960s, probably as a back-formation from the adjective 'grungy', which itself was likely a blend of 'grubby' and 'dingy'. It was adopted in the late 1980s to describe the raw, distorted sound of the Seattle rock music scene.
