Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the early 19th century from the adjective 'groggy' and the suffix '-ness'. 'Groggy' originally meant intoxicated from 'grog' (watered-down rum), a term coined after the British naval commander Admiral Edward Vernon, who was nicknamed 'Old Grog' for his grogram cloak and who ordered his sailors' rum rations diluted in 1740.
