Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French grossier ('wholesaler'), from Medieval Latin grossarius ('dealer in bulk'), from Late Latin grossus ('thick, coarse, great'). Originally, a grocer was a merchant who bought and sold goods 'in gross' (by the wholesale) before the meaning narrowed to a retail dealer in foodstuffs.
