Word Origin & Etymology

From Old English goldsmið, a compound of gold and smið ('metalworker, craftsman'), with cognates across Germanic languages such as German Goldschmied and Old Norse gullsmíðr. In early modern England, goldsmiths also stored bullion for clients and issued promissory receipts, laying the institutional foundations for modern commercial banking.
