1

A guitar, mandolin, or other stringed musical instrument manufactured by the American company Gibson Brands, Inc. (usually capitalized).

2

A classic cocktail made with gin (or occasionally vodka) and dry vermouth, identical to a dry martini except that it is garnished with a pickled pearl onion instead of an olive or lemon twist.

Example

"Before dinner was served, the host mixed a pitcher of chilled Gibsons and garnished each glass with a crisp pearl onion."

Word Origin & Etymology

As a cocktail, it is traditionally attributed to the American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867–1944), who reportedly requested a dry martini garnished with a pickled onion rather than an olive at the Players Club in New York City. As a musical instrument brand, it is named after Orville Gibson, who founded the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co. in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1902.
