Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 16th century from Latin genuinus ('native, natural, innate'), derived from the Indo-European root *genə- ('to give birth, beget'), possibly reinforced by a Roman custom in which a father acknowledged a newborn child as legitimately his own by placing it upon his knee (genu).
