Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the 14th century from Old French frenesie, from Medieval Latin phrenesia, and ultimately from Ancient Greek phrenītis ('delirium' or 'inflammation of the brain'), derived from phrēn ('mind' or 'midriff', which ancient Greeks believed to be the seat of intellect and emotion). It is a linguistic doublet of the medical term phrenitis and shares its root with frantic.
