Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French firmament, from Latin firmamentum ('a support, prop, or strengthening'), derived from firmus ('strong, steadfast'). In Late Latin, it was used in the Vulgate Bible to translate the Ancient Greek stereoma ('solid structure'), which in turn rendered the Hebrew raqia, referring to the solid dome believed in ancient cosmology to hold up the waters above the earth.
