Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 16th century from Latin fascinatio ('an enchanting or bewitching'), from the verb fascinare ('to bewitch or charm') and fascinum ('a witchcraft spell or amulet'). Originally denoting literal sorcery or the casting of the evil eye, the word gradually softened to mean irresistible psychological attraction or intense interest.
