Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 16th century from Latin 'fascinatus', past participle of 'fascinare' ('to bewitch or enchant'), from 'fascinum' ('a spell or witchcraft'). It originally referred to casting an evil spell or immobilizing prey before softening to mean captivating someone's interest.
