Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Old French fantastique, from Late Latin fantasticus, and ultimately from Ancient Greek phantastikos ('able to imagine or present to the mind'), derived from phantazein ('to make visible'). Originally meaning 'existing only in the imagination,' it evolved in the early 20th century into a general term for 'extraordinarily good.'
