Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the mid-17th century as a compound of "excise" (from Middle Dutch excijs, referring to a tax on goods) and "man." Historically, the figure of the exciseman was widely unpopular in Britain and Scotland, famously satirized by the poet Robert Burns, who worked as one himself.
